This post documents the action Such Despotism (Final Version, 4th of July, 2026) by minus plato? on July 4th, 2026, outside the Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow, Scotland. Such Despotism is a project that engages the resonances of the 1970 composition Jefferson by Frederic Rzewski for the current dire state of the United States of America ahead of its 250 “birthday” (with its willful forgetting of the county’s bloody settler colonial identity founded on the genocidal erasure of Native Americans) and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Rzewski wrote Jefferson in response to the Kent State killings in May 1970, while these posts and action are made in response to the film Through a Mirror, Darkly by Naeem Mohaiemen traveling between the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio and the Hunterian Gallery, Glasgow, Scotland.
