Fifty years ago today, Sámi artist Hans Ragnar Mathisen (Áillu Máhte Hánsa), visited Ohio with Tsuut’ina knowledge keeper Lee Crowchild and took photos and made a drawing of the ancient Miamisburg Mound. Thanks to fellow Sámi artist and architect, Joar Nango, I have been lucky enough to meet Hans Ragnar, first in Tromsø, and more recently in Pittsburgh, when they both were participating in this year’s Carnegie International. I share Hans Ragnar’s drawing and photographs today in honor of his work and in the spirit of the connections forged by Indigenous artists from around the world, coming together in friendship and solidarity.
