After a break this Summer, I am catching up on my Friday Abounaddara video posting, 10 years after they were originally posted on the Syrian film collective’s website and the documenta 14 website in 2016. You can find the links to the videos I’ve missed at the bottom of this post, with the dates that they would have been posted this year. I will now resume posting every Friday, with a view to a future reflection, ideally in dialogue with members of Abounaddara about the current state of things in Syria, while also engaging with the comment made by documenta 14 curator Monika Szewczyk, in the 3rd chapter of Dimitris Athiridis’ film Exergue on documenta 14 when she asks her fellow curators how they would explain their working terminology grounded the language of late European philosophy to Charif Kiwan, Abounaddara’s spokesperson, for whom “democracy is a dirty word because in the Middle East it is used to bomb people”.
