Discriminating Ideas and Disobedient Attitudes: Eulàlia Grau’s “Discrimination of Women”

Some days its is harder to write than others…this is one of those days…I cannot finish my sentences and I realize that is because it is the full stop that unmakes the sentence…so today, I choose the ellipsis…I know I am not speaking well…nor am I “well-speaking”…but I cannot care today…I reach for the book Ideas & Attitudes: Catalan Conceptual Art 1969 to 1981…I want to find some frame of reference for the events of yesterday….their unspeakable violence…on pages 34-35 I see the work of Eulàlia…it is called “Discrimination of Women”…from 1977…Discriminació de la dona…

that seems about right…you can be mayor of San Juan…you can be casting your vote…you can be listening to country music…but you are doing these things as a woman…so that makes you disobedient…you are a threat…you may die

…like Eulalia of Barcelona…Saint Eulalia…12 year old…murdered by Diocletian…you can Google her and read the gruesome details for yourself…or look at the 1885 painting of John William Waterhouse…

it is all the same…nothing changes…see you tomorrow…for more outrage…between the monuments to ancient misogyny…the daily cuts of contemporary misogyny…a man with a gun…men with guns…an emperor’s orders…men with swords…rubber bullets…real bullets…Twittering abuse…and all women have is their… disobedient attitude to somehow…how?…change them…these men…us men…to be continued…?
