Book 10: Scandal in the Arena of Spectacle, Survival and Self-Performance

My show hasn’t been picked up yet—I’m still working on the pilot. It’s called She Mad. It’s a half-hour comedy about what it means to be an adult, set against the backdrop of the Los Angeles creative industry. It follows a young, ambitious black woman and her friends as they try to create the lives they want, and deal with the unrealistic goals they and society have set. It’s about futility and hope, individuality and community, privacy and fame. Its themes include survival, self-performance, and the idea that longing for pleasure is the only real pleasure. She Mad is a show about nowhere. Martine Syms
