Sherrie Levine’s kouroi

Continuing the thread of my last few posts on 1980s appropriation, I wanted to focus on Sherrie Levine and her 1981 work Untitled (After Edward Weston). But rather than simply reproduce and comment on her work here, I wanted to offer you a series of images that point to and expand on the spirit of Levine’s work. Weston’s 1922 photographs of his son Neil were supposedly inspired by Greek kouroi statues and so in what follows I want to ask what would it have meant for Levine to have made her work about these kouroi directly and by using GoogleImage?
