Tomorrow I will be attending the 5th International Conference on the Ancient Novel (ICAN) in Houston, Texas and on Friday I will be giving my first public performance under the persona of Minus Plato. My performance – which is not an academic paper – will re-wire Apuleius’ Metamorphoses into the strange machine known as the Contemporary Artist Novel, specifically a recent example by artist Seth Price.
Hi! Very intriguing…That image reminded me of a relatively little-known 24-hour comic about the Emperor Heliogabalus, drawn by the famous Neil Gaiman in 1991. It is not exactly stunning, but seems to reflect a certain approach to Roman imperial sleaze in graphic novels. For Apuleius, Milo Manara's 'Golden Ass' is probably the best-known example. Gaiman dedicates this comic to Eddie Campbell (author of Bacchus).
